956 Posts | In October 2010 when Starliner was purchased to return to Panama City Beach it was stated in news stories that it would be opened in the spring of 2012. Haven't heard anything else but that sping of 2012 date appears not to be the case. Always easier to save, finance and set up a couple of Miracle Stripe small flat rides - the $2 million needed for the Starliner (per the news stories) is another story. I also hope someday it will be restored, it is part of Florida's amusement park history. |

956 Posts | Sad to say but based on the faith of countless other old wooden coasters that others tried to save - the odds are against Starliner ever being rebuilt again. They are cheap to buy, very expensive to rebuil and the trill seekers of today demand more than these old coasters can provide. History is great - but amusement parks are there to make money and not be museums. |

243 Posts | You may be right in the end but there are a few parks that have saved some wooden coasters in the past. Kenobels in Elysburg, PA did save the Phoenix from demolition in San Antonio. They bought and moved the entire coaster, as did Magic Springs and Crystal Falls did when they bought the Florida Hurricane that used to be at Boardwalk & Baseball. Bay Beach Park in Green Bay, WI resurrected the Zippin Pippin from Libertyland in Memphis. Six Flags Great America near Chicago bought the Wooden coaster that had been opperating at Kiddyland Park in the Chicago suburbs for many years.
But, at the same time, Geauga Lake was closed in 2007 and Cedar Fair, the owner of that park, moved many of those rides and coasters that they couldn't sell to its other parks and they left the Big Dipper, one of the the worlds oldest coasters, and the Raging Wolf Bobs there to rot. The Villan wooden coaster was sold for scrap for its steel superstructure as was the Skytower observation tower and the double loop and double corkscrew coaster from Arrow Dynamics which was the first coaster in the world to have four inversions. | | |

So what is left of the Starliner. The purple train, lift motor, brakes and other mechanical stuff were saved. As for the structure. I would say about 1/2 to maybe 2/3 of the bents were saved. With that said, while stacking the ride I was told they removed alot of stuff from the bents, like small add on sections to make the lumber stackable. They were not able to save the running steel from the track as they just did not have time to remove it. The track and the walking ledges were destroyed. So only about 1/2 of the basic supports (bents) are left and the other mechnical stuff. The ride was taken down in 23 days. They basically used chain saws to cut the track and then pryed the track sections from the top ledgers on the bents. A little about the past. Before Starliner was taken down the ride was almost sold to a park in the Philapens (sp). The second option came about was a group of investors looking to build a park in Panama city. Ironically the park was next door to the Miracle strip park. The Starliner was going to be put back right next to its old location and the ride was said to run the oppsite way. That deal fell through. Along comes Pier Park, they claimed ownership only in a news paper typo. They wanted to rebuild the Starliner. There is a small pond next to Pier park that they could put the ride in.
Now with all that said. My thoughts on the Starliner, most likely it will not be rebuilt, If I had to guess the Pier Park thing might do a tribute ride like a shortened version. But with only a small amount of the ride existing it would be to costly to rebuild it. You can build an incredible coaster with about 5 million instead of rebuild an old ride just for nestalgia.. |

956 Posts | Restoring and running a few small rides from the Miracle Strip park is one thing but the cost to rebuild, run and maintain the Starliner is just way too expensive. The last hope for the Starliner was with Kent, when Kent failed it was also the end of the Starliner. It was the end of a lot of what use to be Cypress Gardens. Many things from the past are gone, all victims of changing times. Time moves forward, new coasters replace the old - just like LL replaced CG. |

Who knows, there's even the possibility some crazy group of investors might want to start a park with TWO Allen coasters as their initial line up and save both Starliner AND Zingo. While the current facts may look grim, never rule out unpredictably.
As an example, Two historic schooners in my area, the Spirit of Independence, and the Schooner Virginia, were both in serious limbo(one her owner died, the other was ran by a non-profit organization that couldn't afford to finish her refurbishment), have recently been pulled out of their state of uncertainty. The Virginia even participated in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race, and finished strong. The Spirit of Independence is currently in drydock getting her hull refurbished, and was spotted participating in Harborfest 2012. | | |

956 Posts | It is possible to do anything if one is willing to pay for it. Moving wood coasters in general are just not worth the expense plus do not deliver the thrills that riders expect today. Moving steel coasters in general is more cost effective but it would still have to deliver the thrills that riders expect today.
History is one thing but parks are much more interested in what is cost effective and what their guests expect/want in today's world. Roller coasters are just too big to put in a museum! Another sad fact is that more smaller amusement parks close each year making the supply of used coasters grow with even less demand.

Now that they have the land to do it, and will be moving the whole park to the new site, there's a good chance it will happen this time. Here's a neat idea,they should study the layout of the old MSAP and try to place the actual MSAP rides as close to it as possible. If Starliner does get built, then its safe to say not just a legendary coaster, but a legendary park has been reborn. They will indeed be very close to the Miracle Strip everyone knew, with the exception of a few rides in service elsewhere, or the unfortunately scrapped long flume. | | |

956 Posts | Don't know if it is wise or if any bank or investors would lend the millions required to build a copy of a park that barely made ends meet without millions in new construction loans to pay off. Just rebuilding the Starliner will cost at least $1 million - that alone makes for a lot of debt for a small park to carry. The idea of a legendary park being reborn sounds great but not easy to get the funding or make a go of it. I wish them luck - but I for one don't expect it to become a reality. Sometimes when something no longer exists it just means that in today's world it probably can't exist. |

Yes indeed the hurricanes and insurance company were problems for Kent - also overextending himself with loans on everything he owned made it that any unforseen problem would end in financial disaster with no credit line at reasonable rates left available. Kent took a very big risk to live his dream and lost - it happens everyday. The same could happen with any new park and the massive loans needed to get it built. One hurricane, one rainy or cold tourist season, one recession, one oil spill, etc. and it turns into an economic disaster. Just think of the older smaller established amusement parks that already paid off most if not all their orignal debt that have a hard time surviving and are closing all over the country - it is that much harder for a new small park to start and survive. I wish anyone starting any business the best of luck- today more then ever they will need as much luck as they can get. |

234 Posts | Awesome! Hard times have fallen on me financially otherwise I'd have a brick as well. As far as a long trek, Portsmouth Virginia is 13 hours away give or take a few, lol. I'll definitely try to see it though once it's built which should be sometime around 2015 if I'm not mistaken. I'm just bummed Gwazi and possibly Cheetah are facing possible closure. I loved the old Gwaz and Cheetah was my second Wooden Coaster, and was a regional rival for Starliner between Cheetah's opening and MSAP's closure. Starliner surprisingly held its own vs Cheetah in terms of speed, despite being smaller and much older. | | |

243 Posts | I feel the same about Gwazi as well and I've never been on Cheetah in Wild Adventures. I've been hearing its a real rough ride now. The refurb with the addition of the Millenium Flyer trains did wonders for Gwazi but it quickly returned to its headache generating machine within a year. It'll be sad to see it go, but I hope it gets replaced by something decent. Afterall, Gwazi did replace the brewery. | | |

234 Posts | Cheetah is a great ride that simply needs a better maintenance budget and in bad need of better trains that don't have a reputation of eating up a wooden track prematurely. Before my move they did a recent track refurb and the magic was definitely back. The Cheetah was much smoother, felt alot faster, and had more airtime than I ever remembered it having. Now, knowing how those stupid Gerstlauer Trains kill tracks, it wouldn't surprise me the coaster is a bruiser once again. Rumors a while back were it was going to get a set of Millenium Flyers, but it never happened. Meanwhile the Cookie Cutter Expre..... err, Boomerang, received new trains. :/ | | |

243 Posts | I've seen their updates and I've been following them on their Facebook page as well. They've done a pretty good job getting most of the rides that were at the original MSAP. Hopefully, one of these years, I'll be able to go there for a few days to enjoy the park and find my brick. | | |

234 Posts | Newest map with their plans for Starliner, which seems to involve steroids, lol. They are turning the hill at a right angle to the rest of the layout to save room, and gave the turn around a more agressive angle in this rendering, calling it Starliner 2.0.
Edited= LA Times travel listed #4 as among the top 15 anticipated rides opening in 2015

Pretty sure most of the wood from the original Miracle Strip didn't make it to Cypress Gardens. And then, I bet virtually none(if any) of the wood from the CG version will be reused. | | |

956 Posts | Miracle Strip Pier Park closed in September 2015 and "may" open again if a purchaser can get zoning to build one of those massive observation wheels like those being built in most tourist areas. Of course the owners of the failed pier park say the new owners (if they get zoning changes) "plan" to re-open it and yes indeed "plan" to eventually rebuild Starliner. "Plans" to rebuild Starliner have been around since 2012 with never any construction action taken and in all probability none will ever be taken. I recently have been to Panama City Beach and it is growing quickly into a higher class tourist beach resort area - making land values much too expensive for any current or planned amusement park to survive. Would make more money selling the land then from an amusement park. The reason why so many historic amusement parks have closed and are closing.
