The County Commission approved a resolution supporting the designation of the botanical gardens and the ski show circle on the National Register of Historic Places.
Tuesday's action came at the requests of Bob Gernert, executive director of the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce, who is leading the effort.
In a letter to Commission Chairman Melony Bell, Gernert said the designation will aid in attempts to promote heritage tourism in Polk County and would make the area eligible for historic preservation funds to restore the Florida-shaped swimming pool and the retaining walls in the canals.
Local history and tourism officials have been holding a series of meetings to organize a local heritage trail to attract visitors to Polk's top historical and cultural sites.
Cypress Gardens was founded by the late Dick and Julie Pope in 1936 as one of Florida's pioneering tourist attractions.
Gernert wrote that the designation would be a fitting tribute to the Popes' legacy as well as "Polk County's moment in the Viva Florida 500 celebration." |

--Guest-- | I'm all for adding the gardens to the National Register of Historic Places since it provides an extra layer of protection for them. I wouldn't include the ski show circle since that area is in good condition and LL is quite capable of maintaining it as is.
I doubt this story is why LL is sprucing up the Oriental Gardens since the work in that area started well before this story came out. What's more likely is LL was looking at the cost of restoring the Florida Pool/canals and found it to be prohibitively expensive. Why should they foot the entire bill to restore something that's been neglected for decades? I think it fair that some of these costs be offset before LL starts the full-time maintenance of them.
Since LL was denied $500,000 in funds a couple years ago to renovate the gardens, this looks to be another way for them to get some financial assistance for an area they would rather not maintain. |

956 Posts | How would it be part of a "heritage trail" when folks would have to pay admission to LL (a for profit corporation) to see it? Why should tax dollars of any kind or historic preservation funds be used for something a private for profit entity charges admission to see? It seems to be that LL got the right to charge admission to see the historic gardens because they did agree to pay for the maintenance and upkeep. Polk county should force LL to live up to their agreement or make the historic gardens seperate from LL and use a seperate admission fee, historic preservation funds and Polk County tax dollars to run it. Then indeed it would really be part of a heritage trail. |

6 Posts | You're right Ed. Thats a great idea. Shame on the state of Florida for not buying the property before it got ruined and run into the ground. It should have been made into a state Historical Site in the late 80's. It almost happened but the greed the Winter Haven City Council got in the way of that happening. Sad thing it didnt happen for sure.... |

--Guest-- | There are several things I would like to see Legoland address in regards to the gardens:
1. At the entrance to the gardens, install an accurate map that depicts ALL the gardens. Next to the map should be a brief description of the historical significance of the gardens that includes: who built the gardens, why they were built, their impact on Florida tourism, how they were saved from development, and their inclusion to the National Register of Historical Places.
I think a good place for the map/sign would be in the central area area just below the Cypress Gardens entrance sign (pictured below). The central green lattice framework could be removed and replaced with the map and historical summary. The yellow Lego Southern belle would have to be moved (I think the Big Lagoon Overlook would be the perfect location for it if the park would finally get around to reopening it).
2. Install a sign explaining the significance of the Florida Pool (perhaps using the same location as the old picture sign). It would be a good idea to include an overhead picture of the pool so guests can visualize it more clearly. How many more months does the park need before a simple sign can be put in place?
3. Update the directional signs to include the Florida Pool and the Oriental Gardens. While updating the signage, replace the erroneously labeled "Fountain" sign to read "Waterfall" since that's what it's actually referring to. Also, the sign that says "No Outlet" should be replaced with a sign that says "French Garden" and the garden should also be reopened immediately.
These a very modest requests and shouldn't require any government funding to carry out. |

--Guest-- | I think they'll eventually produce a park map that includes those areas. I doubt they would actually label those areas on the park map since space is very limited. That's why I would like to see a detailed map at the entrance to the gardens that has all the main areas labeled. |

956 Posts | If you ever want to see a historic garden that is still maintained to very high standards and is still indeed one of the best gardens in the world - if you ever have the opportunity then see Butchart Gardens in Victoria, BC. I was there last summer and was truly amazed. The Butchart Gardens are over 100 years old and still Butchart family owned and operated. The gardens are on a scale and beauty that is really beyond all others and in a class by itself. Even in the peak years of Cypress Gardens - Butchart Gardens today is way beyond what Cypress Gardens ever was. Butchart Gardens are a tribute to the Butchart family that for generations worked to keep the family dream alive and is a gift to all who have and still see it. Pope had his dream in Cypress Gardens but his family sold his dream and what is left today is far from the standards of what it was and be it a registered Historic Place or not - all that is really left is a barely maintained shell of what it was. Kind of like those historic markers that refer to what was but what was is lost forever and is just a memory. A memory that fades away as those who have the memory fade away. |
